Position Summary: Country Day, an independent coeducational day school located in Charlotte, NC, is currently recruiting for an HVAC Technician. This position is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and operation of the school’s HVAC and mechanical systems. The position supports overall facility operations and school events as needed, while ensuring a safe, reliable, and well-maintained campus environment. This is a full-time position with benefits.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Works in a team-oriented, safety-conscious environment and complies with all school safety policies, guidelines, and procedures.
• Receives work assignments from the supervisor, communicates with the person requesting service to determine the work required, and completes assignments independently or collaboratively with others.
• Performs preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs, adjustments, and installations for commercial and industrial air conditioning, refrigeration, cooling, hot water, and boiler systems.
• Performs refrigerant recovery; silver soldering; sweating copper tubing; and cutting, threading, and assembling black iron and galvanized pipe up to 3 inches.
• Operates and maintains chillers, condensers, compressors, cooling towers, package units, associated electrical, electronic, and pneumatic controls, and related piping systems, including precision rebuilding of components.
• Maintains records for assigned equipment and inventories repair supplies and materials; prepares material requisitions for supervisor approval as needed.
• Operates a variety of industrial and facility equipment, including forklifts, scissor lifts, basket trucks, backhoes, and bobcats.
• Uses a variety of hand and power tools and equipment, including wrenches, pliers, hammers, grinders, saws, impact wrenches, hydraulic pullers, drill presses, cutting torches and accessories, measuring tools, and rigging equipment.
• Assists other trades as directed by the supervisor.
• Supports school events and, as needed, assists Plant Operations, Grounds, and School Administration with event setup, problem-solving, and other facility-related needs outside the technical field of HVAC.
• Maintains flexibility to work overtime, including weekends and holidays, and participate in on-call responsibilities as needed.

MINIMUM ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

• Minimum five years of progressive experience in the HVAC/R field, including experience with commercial and residential heating and cooling equipment.
• Formal HVAC training or certification from a technical or industrial trade school.
• EPA Refrigerant Certification.
• Sound knowledge of supporting trades, including electrical, construction, and blueprint reading.
• Knowledge and experience with HVAC controls and direct digital control systems/technology.
• Familiarity with commercial and pool dehumidification systems preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with other trades and individuals from diverse backgrounds.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to interact effectively with faculty, staff, administrators, parents, and others in the school community.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Ability to stand, walk, sit, crouch, climb, bend, and perform repetitive motions as required to perform assigned duties.
• Ability to work from elevated areas, including ladders, platforms, and scaffolding, and use appropriate fall protection equipment when required.
• Ability to lift and carry materials, tools, and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds for short durations.
• Ability to safely operate required tools, equipment, vehicles, and machinery.
• Ability to work in varying indoor and outdoor environmental conditions, including exposure to heat, cold, noise, dust, and mechanical equipment.
• Ability to perform the physical activities necessary to safely and effectively perform the essential functions of the position.

 

 

MENTAL AND COGNITIVE REQUIREMENTS

• Ability to troubleshoot, diagnose, and resolve HVAC and mechanical system issues.
• Ability to interpret technical information, equipment manuals, blueprints, work orders, and safety procedures.
• Ability to exercise sound judgment and make appropriate decisions when addressing maintenance issues and facility needs.
• Ability to prioritize assignments, manage multiple requests, and work independently with appropriate direction.
• Ability to communicate effectively and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers and members of the school community.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND SCHEDULE

• Work is performed in a variety of indoor and outdoor environments and may involve exposure to varying temperatures, noise, dust, mechanical equipment, and other conditions associated with HVAC and facility maintenance.
• The position requires flexibility to work overtime, including weekends and holidays, and participate in on-call responsibilities based on school needs.
